Pocket Concrete Penetrometer - ASI-213

Pocket Concrete Penetrometer - ASI-213

For fast evaluation of the initial setting of concrete. It can be used on light- weight concrete, special roof deck mixes and concrete additives. Specification: Consists of a needle having face area 3/10 sq. cm. and graduated at a distance of 25 cm. The needles point is an integral part of barrel which houses a calibrated spring. The spring is confined in a sleeve. The resistance offered by the concrete mortar is shown on the direct reading scale with a marker ring which holds its position when released. Scale range is 0-50 kg/cm when the penetration resistance reaches a value of 35 kg/ cm2 the concrete is assumed initially set. Supplied complete in wooden carrying case.

ASTM C-403 Summary
Standard Number ASTM C 403 / C403M
Title Standard Test Method for Time of Setting of Concrete Mixtures by Penetration Resistance
Purpose To determine the initial and final setting time of concrete mixtures using penetration resistance.
Applicable Materials Hydraulic cement concrete, mortar portion (after sieving out coarse aggregates)
Apparatus Penetrometer device with interchangeable needle tips of varying areas
Initial Setting Time Occurs when penetration resistance = 500 psi (3.5 MPa)
Final Setting Time Occurs when penetration resistance = 4000 psi (27.6 MPa)
Sample Preparation Concrete sieved through 4.75 mm sieve to obtain mortar for testing
Test Procedure Measure penetration resistance at regular time intervals.
Plot penetration resistance vs. elapsed time.
Determine initial and final set points from graph.
Significance Helps in scheduling finishing operations, formwork removal, and controlling admixture effects.
Units Can be reported in psi or MPa
