Permeability Apparatus (Single Cell Model) - ASI-633

Permeability Apparatus (Single Cell Model) - ASI-633

One of the durability tests of concrete is to determine permeability of water through specimen. Permeability apparatus is used for determining the permeability of cement mortar and concrete specimens of 15 cm cubes cast in the Laboratory. Specifications: The concrete permeability apparatus comprises of a brass/gunmetal cell of squares crosssection mounted on a stand and a pressure chamber is connected to the cell through copper tubing and Tconnector mounted on the stand with sleeve packed vale and rubber hose pipe with end connections. The cell assembly consists of one base plate, one metal funnel and one top plate, the pressure chamber is fitted with a pressure regulator which helps in regulating the pressure from 0-15kg/cm sq. gauge is for indicating the pressure in the cell. A foot pump and a pressure tube is supplied to develop pressure in the chamber. The apparatus is supplied with a measuring cylinder 500 cc to measure percolated quantity for water. Pressure can also be applied by a pressure air line or by a compressor.

Standard Number IS: 3085
Title Method of Test for Permeability of Cement Mortar and Concrete
Purpose To determine the permeability of cement mortar and concrete specimens under water pressure.
Specimen Type Cylindrical concrete or mortar specimens (usually 150 mm diameter × 150 mm height)
Apparatus
  • Permeability cell
  • Water reservoir
  • Pressure gauge & regulator (5 to 10 kg/cm² range)
Procedure
  1. Saturate specimen in water for 24 hours
  2. Fix in permeability cell
  3. Apply water pressure (e.g., 10 kg/cm²) for 72 hours
  4. Split specimen and measure water penetration depth
Result Expression Maximum depth of water penetration in mm
(Lower depth indicates better impermeability)
Significance Indicates concrete durability, resistance to water ingress, and helps assess water-tightness of structures.
Applications Water-retaining structures, basements, tunnels, dams, waterproof concrete
Units Water pressure in kg/cm², Penetration depth in mm
